On the 1st of July 2000, Australia introduced the Luxury Car Tax (LCT). This means an additional amount of tax is charged on vehicles that are deemed to be in the luxury category.
Briefly, the LCT payable on a car is 33% of the GST-exclusive portion of the car’s price (including GST but excluding government fees and charges such as stamp duty, registration & CTP) exceeding the Luxury Car Tax threshold. Thankfully, Australia has a small concession for vehicles deemed “fuel efficient”, that meaning uses less than 7 litres of fuel per 100 kilometers. This rate is currently $75,526 AUD.
I spent some time looking at Australian Model 3 pricing here, in mypost today I’ll spend some time looking at pre/post delivery purchasing for EAP and FSD.
Due to the decreasing AUD/USD, pricing of the Tesla Model 3 in Australia is estimated to be quite expensive. In this blog post, I’ll analyse if it will be cheaper to purchase EAP/FSD during vehicle configuration or after. I’m going to look at two models, the Long Range (rear-wheel drive) and the Performance for comparison.
Long Range Model 3
Firstly, lets break down the costs and we’ll use live conversion rates of $0.70695 AUD/USD.
No EAP/FSD
- Long Range Model 3 – $60,825.96 AUD
- Delivery – $4,243.67 AUD
- GST – $6,505.95 AUD
- LCT – $0! AUD
- Stamp Duty – $2,680 AUD
- Registration – $569 AUD
- CTP Insurance – $360 AUD
- Total Drive Away – $75,173.45 AUD
EAP/FSD
- Long Range Model 3 – $60,825.96 AUD
- Delivery – $4,243.67 AUD
- EAP – $4,242.41 AUD
- FSD – $7,069.69 AUD
- GST – $6,505.95 AUD
- LCT – $2,538.56 AUD
- Stamp Duty – $2,680 AUD
- Registration – $569 AUD
- CTP Insurance – $360 AUD
- Total Drive Away – $89,024.11 AUD
That’s a staggering $13,850.66 increase when you add in EAP, FSD and paying LCT on this amount! What would the price look like if I added it afterwards?
Adding EAP/FSD post delivery

- GST – $6,505.95 AUD
- LCT – $0! AUD
- Stamp Duty – $2,680 AUD

- EAP – $5,656.72
- FSD – $9,899.25
- Total including EAP and FSD – $90,729.42
So in the Tesla Model 3 Long Range example, it is cheaper to purchase EAP and FSD at configuration by approximately $1,705.31 AUD
Performance Model 3
Firstly, lets break down the costs and we’ll use live conversion rates of $0.70695 AUD/USD.
No EAP/FSD
- Performance Model 3 – $82,009.52 AUD
- Delivery – $4,243.67 AUD
- GST – $8,625.14 AUD
- LCT – $5,805.16 AUD
- Stamp Duty – $4,135 AUD
- Registration – $569 AUD
- CTP Insurance – $360 AUD
- Total Drive Away – $105,751.79 AUD
EAP/FSD
- Performance Model 3 – $82,009.52 AUD
- Delivery – $4,243.67 AUD
- EAP – $4,242.41 AUD
- FSD – $7,069.69 AUD
- GST – $6,505.95 AUD
- LCT – $9,539.60 AUD
- Stamp Duty – $4,945 AUD
- Registration – $569 AUD
- CTP Insurance – $360 AUD
- Total Drive Away – $122,738.26 AUD
That’s a staggering $16,986.47 increase this time when EAP and FSD is added to the Performance Model 3 at configuration! Lets have a look if savings could be had adding these post sale.
Adding EAP/FSD post delivery

In this example, we can actually see that adding EAP and FSD after the sale gives you some savings of $1,430.50 AUD. One would have to assume that this is because of the LCT applying right from the start on the Performance Model 3. I’d assume the Long Range Dual-Motor would be cheaper buying afterwards also however please ensure you work through your own numbers.
